Starting a new business is daunting, exciting and a lot of hard work. Over the last two years I have gone from being a drama and dance teacher in an East London school, to setting up The London Cheerleaders; and, over the last couple of months, I’ve been getting Energise Education off the ground. It’s been exciting, and scary.

I have thought a lot about fear over the last couple of months, and this is one area that I have had to work on. The fear of not succeeding, but also the fear of it all succeeding but growing too big too fast and not being able to cope! This is where the planning and research comes into play, and I’ve reminded myself of different “fear” quotes - e.g., “there’s nothing to fear but fear itself”...“everything you want is on the other side of fear”. I’ve had to recognised that part of the fear comes from doing something I have never done before - put me in front of a class of 30 teenagers and I am fine, I know what I am doing, I have done it many times before. But sales and marketing, cold calls and business meetings are all skills I am developing, refining, and working on.

One of the most exciting thing about running this business is when I am standing on the side of the pitch at Twickenham watching 20 cheerleaders perform and seeing my hard work coming together with the the hard work of the team for a successful performance. It’s also exciting when I get a sale from a call or email, and recently when I signed up my first school to my new programme. All that is when all the fear I have pushed through and hard work I’ve done is 100% worth it!

Oh and on hard work: running your own business means constantly thinking/planning/rehearsing/calling and then re-thinking/planning/rehearsing and calling. It is a never-ending process that can be disheartening. To manage that, I have been taking some time out and watching useful sales and marketing clips on Youtube.- One particular person who has caught my eye is Brian Tracy. What he says about marketing and sales has really helped my development, changing my thoughts to going for the no’s - the more no’s you get the more yes’s will come. Now I remind myself what I have to offer is a fantastic service,and the people I am calling and emailing deserve to know what I have to offer. I’m keeping focussed and determined!

Hard work, determination and pushing through that fear are three of the main things you need to do to get your business up and running. They are the three things that can hinder you if not done properly, but three things that can make you succeed as well.
